You can do this, you really can! Quit wasting all those dollars on what passes for tortillas at the grocery store. These are usually full of un-pronouncable ingredients anyway. With just a few ingredients, a rolling pin, a frying pan, and about 15 minutes you can whip up homemade tortillas that will have your kids begging for more! Did I mention they are easy?
2 Cups Flour
1/2 TBSP baking Powder
1 tsp Salt
1/2 cup + 2 Tbps warm water
3 TBSP cooking Oil of your choice (I use vegetable oil)
Mix the oil and the water, then dump in the dry ingredients and stir with a fork. Once its too stiff to stir, mix with your hands till it all comes together.
Let it rest for about 5-10 minutes. I usually pre-heat my frying pan, get the ingredients out that are going inside and make the filling if we are doing burritos. You could also pull out your phone and check your e-mail/facebook/whatever
Now divide up your dough into 6-8 little balls. I like to roll these in flour to keep them from sticking and to make them easier to roll out.
Flatten out a ball, and roll it with a rolling pin until you reach your desired thickness. I usually prefer mine as thin as possible, but thick ones can be good for “gordita style” burritos.
Now you just cook the tortillas in a frying pan with oil brushed across the bottom (you only need a drop). You flip the tortilla when it starts to bubble and let it finish cooking.
Ta Da! Yummy Homemade Tortillas! I highly recommend eating these with…everything! If you don’t need them all then just bag up the rest and toss them in the refrigerator for later. They will keep for about 2 days. I haven’t tried freezing them yet, but let me know if you try it!
I’m serious, If you can make pancakes, you can make homemade tortillas!
FYI- Tortillas really DO taste a bit better if you use Lard…I just can’t bring myself to do it, these tortillas aren’t QUITE as soft or savory as a lard-filled tortilla, but they are MUCH better than store-bought tortillas and they aren’t nearly as bad for you.
They are also easier to make…which is a plus for me!
